Julie Koidin Biography

A native of the Chicago area, Julie Koidin is a classically trained flutist, and is an experienced soloist,  orchestral and chamber musician, and studio musician. Her recent appearances include performing Paquito D'Rivera's "Danzon" flute concerto with the Millenium Chamber Orchestra as part of the 2008 Chicago Latino Music Festival, and recording on two 2009 CD releases on the Chicago Sessions label (Paulinho Garcia's "My Very Life" and Zvonimir Tot's "Eloquent Silence"). In December 2008, she taught and performed recitals at the conservatories in Belgrade and Novi Sad, Serbia, as part of her fourth Fulbright Award.

Dr. Koidin has a keen interest in a little known genre in the U.S. - that of Brazilian choro music. Since 1995, she has been researching choro, and since 1997 she has been performing both classical and Brazilian genres throughout Brazil. These concerts include performances with legendary choro flutists Altamiro Carrilho, Andrea Ernest Dias, and Carlos Poyares. In July, 2000, she was the only American invited to perform with Altamiro Carrilho at the Teatro Municipal in São Paulo, in a gala concert celebrating his career.

Her solo appearances include the National Flute Association's Convention; Chicago radio's "Live from WFMT" program; the Dame Myra Hess Concert Series; and various programs at the Chicago Cultural Center. In March, 2001, she began performing with Brazilian pianist, Maria Teresa Madeira, in Chicago and Brazil.  In 2002, the duo received a special invitation to perform for the U.S. Embassy in Brasilia.

Since 1997 she has been performing with Brazilian guitarist/vocalist, Paulinho Garcia in the duo, Dois no Choro which has produced 3 CD’s: Carinhoso, Juntos (2002 Jazzmin),  Asa Branca  (2008 Laughing Buddha Music). The latter two CDs received Special Assistance Grants from the Illinois Arts Council. Juntos has the special participation of Altamiro Carrilho and Maria Teresa Madeira. One of the selections from the Juntos CD – Chorinho pra Nós, received an honorable mention in the “Chorando No Rio” competition for new choro compositions in 2001, and was the only U.S. entry.

In 2006, Dr. Koidin began performing in concerts with the newly formed, Chicago Latino Composers organization, a cooperative of Chicago's leading composers from Central and South America including Elbio Barilari (Uruguay), Gustavo Leone (Argentina), and Sergio Assad (Brazil). February 2006 marked her first performance with this group as a guest with the MAVerick Ensemble, performing in the Chicago Cultural Center's Preston Bradley Hall.

February 2007 marked her second performance with the Chicago Latino Composers organization, also in Preston Bradley, but with a newly formed trio: Julie Koidin, flute; Wagner Campos, clarinet; and Rick Ferguson, piano. This ensemble grew to become the Ondas Ensemble.
